What it Means when Marijuana is Purple

If you’ve noticed that your marijuana is purple, you might be worried. This actually happens due to the presence of what’s called anthocyanins, which is a pigment that’s soluble in water, and this can make the purple color appear in plants. It also may make the plant blue, red, or even black, and it can even show up in eggplants, berries, and there are even purple cauliflower too.

Here, you’ll learn a little bit about this. But this typically happens during temperatures that are colder, as the chlorophyll that’s there, which creates the green nature, starts to break down, and then, more anthocyanins start to appear.

The benefits of these anthocyanins

If you’ve ever wondered what anthocyanins do, well, you’re not alone. They’re actually considered flavonoids, and that’s actually antioxidant types of materials, and also reduce inflammation. They are responsible for attracting the pollinators, and also protect against different stressors.

The anthocyanins also have other effects that come with this too:

  • They prevent diabetes

  • They can prevent the spread of cancer cells

  • They are a natural antimicrobial, so it may prevent the movement and presence of some bacteria that is gram-positive

  • They reduce the possibility of obesity through the regulation of the metabolism, and also reduces the lipogenesis is and some inflammation and oxidative stress, resulting in obesity

  • They can also improve the blood lipids within the body, and also prevent heart disease

In general, this is something that you definitely shouldn’t worry about, and if you see weed that’s purple, you shouldn’t fret, because it’s something good for you.

The first Purple Weed

If you’ve ever wondered how this came about, well, the reality is that there is no particular way to pinpoint it, but there are some that have been grown purposefully to create this.

Probably the first one was called purple #1, and this was one that happened during the 1980s, and was super popular in the cannabis scene. This was a hybrid that was perfectly balanced. It was made through purple afghani, along with other sativas and indicas. Then of course, there was the popularity of purple haze due to the Jimi Hendrix song of that name, and it’s actually a direct reference to that cannabis and its color.

But there are also other types that also came out, including the other purple haze strains that came from the Haze Brothers and another guy by the name of Sam the Skunkman, who also helped with developing this. They’ve been super popular for a long time, and usually, breeders make these specifically with certain plant types and profiles.

Usually, you see these in plants that are indica-dominant due to the fact that they are grown in a lot colder climates, you can find them in some sativa plants. There are some that have recently been bred to create a purple color, and are either hybrid sativas, or sativa purely, and these of course, will have the different colors.

Purple Haze, Candyland, Tropicana Cookies, Sherbet, and purple skunk are all examples of this type of purple sativa and are still quite popular for those interested in getting the most that they can out of the cannabis that they have, and what they offer.

If you’re someone who has been hearing about purple sativas, you aren’t alone. There are a lot of great purple plants out there, and if you have cannabis that’s purple, don’t fret. In fact, the anthocyanins within this can be quite wonderful, and a good one to consider if you’re breeding for those types of traits as well.
